Lessons from Zig Ziglar

“… do these things and I will see you at the top!” – Zig Ziglar

Hilary Ziglar, better known as Zig Ziglar, was born in Alabama in the USA in 1926. He grew up with 11 siblings, but when he was just six years old his father died, followed two days later by his younger sister. Now a single parent, his mother raised him to be a man of strong values and principles, values that he stood by for the rest of his life as he went on to become a best-selling author and internationally recognised motivational speaker. Through his experiences and inspirational words of wisdom, he helped millions of people to reach the top of their game, famously ending his speeches with the line “… do these things and I will see you at the top!” So, what are “these things” and can they be applied to your life to help you make it all the way to the top?

See You at the Top

Zig Ziglar died at the age of 86 in 2012, but he left behind a legacy of over 30 books, the first of which was See You at the Top. Having sold over 1 million copies and still in print today, it’s hard to believe that the manuscript was rejected 39 times before finally making it into print. On dealing with knock backs and rejection, he said, “Getting knocked down in life is a given… getting back up and moving forward is a choice.”

Choosing to get back up and keep going is one of the key things you need to do to make it all the way to the top. After serving in the US Navy during World War II, Zig dropped out of college to enter a career in sales with a cookware company. He wasn’t an instant success and he struggled for several years before his divisional supervisor gave him some words of encouragement. Zig said, “Mr Merrell changed the way I saw myself – a little guy with an inferiority complex from a small Mississippi town. The change was dramatic.” His sales improved and he was soon promoted to field manager, then divisional supervisor. He learned to believe in himself and to see himself as a success in the making.

Being Your Best Self

It was always Zig’s belief that no matter what you do in life, you’re always a salesperson. In the business world, people may be buying products, but they’re also buying into the person selling the product. People buy into people. Zig put it this way: “If people like you they’ll listen to you. But if they trust you, they’ll do business with you.”

In all areas of life and in whatever you choose to do, always do it to the best of your ability, and do it with honesty and integrity. Let’s face it, you can only be an honest salesman if you believe in the product or service you’re selling, and the same principle can be applied to believing in yourself.

But, perhaps the most important thing you need to do to make it all the way to the top is to maintain a positive attitude. To be able to pick yourself up after rejection takes a positive mental attitude, and to be able to keep making every effort a best effort takes a positive mental attitude. Zig Ziglar never lost his passion and enthusiasm for “selling” and he epitomised positivity, sending out a clear message that we can all learn from when he said, “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.”
