Living the Dream

“Dreams are extremely important. You can’t do it unless you imagine it.” – George Lucas

What does “living the dream” mean to you?

It’s a commonly used phrase, but can you instantly answer the question of what it means to you? Probably not, unless you’re focusing on what living the dream isn’t. You see, “living the dream” is often used sarcastically… someone asks how you are or how your life is going and your sarcastic reply instantly gets the message across that you’re really not happy with your lot in life, right?

You know what your dream life isn’t, but it doesn’t answer the question of what your dream life is. To be able to live your dream life, you need to know what that dream life looks like.

Your Life, Your Dream

It’s fair to say that many of us compare our lives to the lives of others and come up with imaginings of a “dream life” based on material possessions. We imagine that if we had all the things they have – whether it’s huge houses all over the world, private jets, swimming pools, or more spare cash than you could shake a stick at – we’d be happy with our lot in life.

Well, that’s as may be, but there are lots of unhappy financially wealthy people out there

( Just read the sad story of the uber successful DJ Avicii https://www.donaldmacnaughton.co.uk/performance-anxiety-and-burnout/

) so perhaps there’s more to living the dream than material possessions alone.

We say the dream, but there’s no one-size-fits-all dream life.

We tend to measure success in life against wealth, but all it takes to truly succeed in life is to live the life you want. So, can you answer the question of what you want out of life? To help you find the answer, take a moment to jot down the names of anyone you believe to be living the dream.

Next, consider which elements of their life and lifestyle you find most appealing. In so doing, you begin to build a picture of the things that inspire you. Perhaps it is their wealth that inspires you, but chances are it’s something more. Successful people do what they love and love what they do; they’re living their dream because they’re doing something they feel passionate about.

When you connect with your passion, you discover your true self, and you find your inspiration… a dream life is an inspired life.

Dream Big

Having inspirational role models in your life can open your mind to the potential for achieving more, but if your dream or ambition is something you feel you should be doing, you could be pursuing someone else’s dream for you.

Always remember that you’re only living the dream if you’re living the life you want.

The biggest problem many people have is nothing more than dreaming too small. It’s all too easy to slip into thinking that dreams are just that, dreams, and they could never be your reality. Perhaps you dream of being an artist, but influential others in your life are telling you that dreams don’t pay the bills and you need to get a “proper job”.

With this being the case, you settle into a job that pays the bills… and then when someone asks you how your life is going, you reply with a sarcastic, “living the dream.”

Dreams can only become realities if you believe they can. As Walt Disney once wisely said, “Believe in your dreams, no matter how impossible they seem.”

Impossible Dreams?

Allow yourself to dream big. Put all thoughts of practicality or feasibility to once side for a moment and imagine yourself living your dream life. Ask yourself: who are you; what do you do; where do you live; who is in your life with you, and what are you most proud of in your life? Be absolutely truthful, there are no right or wrong answers. If you can see yourself “living the dream”, you’re one step closer to living it.

To sum it all up, the last word goes to Greek philosopher Epictetus: “First say to yourself what you would be, and then do what you have to do.”
