The Power of NLP

Imagine being the person you want to be, not the person you believe yourself to be right now. You might think this is just the stuff of dreams, and a million miles from your reality, but trust me when I say you can become that person. That’s the power of NLP.

What Is NLP?

In a nutshell, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is a study of what makes successful people successful. At its core, it’s simply a method of discovering how anyone produces excellence in anything, and it’s used across sport, business, education, and by anyone interested in developing better personal effectiveness in life… in other words, being the best you can be in whatever it is you do.

How Does NLP Work?

NLP began as a study of successful language patters back in the 1970s. It rapidly developed into a study of effective behavioural patterns, adding routine thought processes, emotions, and actions to the language used by high achievers. Through NLP, curiosity is encouraged. It encourages everyone to be curious about themselves, other people, and the world they live in. Making connections and comparisons between the way successful people think and view the world and the way you think can hold the key to realising that your current beliefs and behavioural patterns could be holding you back in life.

To be able to make changes, it must first be recognised that change is needed.

Your perception of yourself and the world you live in is simply that, your perception. “The map is not the territory” is a founding principle of NLP and, in a nutshell, it simply means that the mental map we each create through past experiences and beliefs is not always accurate. Your mental map is nothing more than your perception of the world around you, it’s not the actual world.

The Power of NLP

Understanding that the way you think and behave can be changed holds the key to making those changes happen. NLP is the study of excellence. Studying models of excellence, whatever field they excel in, is at the heart of learning to adopt the successful ways of thinking and doing that will allow you to succeed, effectively changing your mental map.

The techniques and mental skills learned and practised in NLP promote confidence. With confidence you learn to change the patterns of thought and behaviour that have been holding you back. When you become free of self-imposed limitations, you allow yourself to go beyond imagining the person you want to be, and you become that person – achieving your true potential.   As Buddha once wisely said, “All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.”
